Haiti Day 1

Amber

Sorry, skype is a little frustrating. Our flight sucked last night. I took a unisom before we boarded, it made me so tired and I fell asleep but there was so much turbulence that it woke me up every 10 minutes. Nobody slept on either flight. Once we got here, it was too humid and hot in the dorm to sleep so we just went to work, we have to dig all the footings by hand, no tractors. We are all exhausted from working and not getting any sleep today.

The facility is incredible, they employ about 400 of the locals, we have 4 of them working with us and the rest of them build prefab homes, they make $1.25 per hour and that is considered great pay. The staff from samaritans purse are all incredibly nice too. It was sad today to see all the tent cities and the kids EVERYWHERE, it's worse to hear some of the horror stories from the staff here, things that they have actually gone through. Chad was telling us that they found a naked 8 year old boy at the gate of the compound the other day, after they talked to him, they took him home and talked to the lady he was with. She found him in a box when he was an infant and has kept him as her slave since, one of the locals with Chad was able to convince her to sell the boy and he bought the boy from her and they took him to see a judge and got him placed in an orphanage. Chad didn't say how much it cost but he said he witnessed them exchanging the boy for money. This is just one of the terrible stories we have heard, it made everybody cry pretty much.
